In Matthew 9 and 10, Jesus interacts with the crowds and has compassion on them. And in addition to providing for the crowds Himself, Jesus also encourages His followers to pray to the Lord of the Harvest to send out workers into the harvest field. These verses invite us to do just that – to pray for God to send workers – and to receive those who bring the message of the Kingdom to us as gifts of Jesus’ compassion for us. Since those who are sent are also sinners who have received Christ’s mercy (see Matthew 9:13), they are called to give of themselves freely, just as they have freely received. Today’s message is “Jesus’ Compassion Sends Workers,” based on Matthew 9:35-10:8.
